The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a public workshop June 7-9, titled "Building Medical Device Supply Chain Resilience: A Healthcare and Public Health Ecosystem-Wide Collaboration." The FDA shared information and collected stakeholder perspectives on activities and collaborations to improve supply chain sustainability with respect to medical devices.
While drug shortages have long been a priority of the FDA and other public health agencies, the COVID-19 public health emergency and corresponding shortages of personal protective equipment brought to light the need for enhancements in proactive supply chain monitoring, predictive modeling, early warning systems, communication capabilities and other efforts focused more on medical devices. The FDA recently instituted the for medical devices to help address these needs. The June workshop was among the planned RSCP information-sharing efforts to engage interested stakeholders in device supply chain issues.
