The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 included a new, one-time requirement for any Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered (non-veterinarian) practitioner to complete eight hours of training that addresses “the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.” A DEA provides details about how the requirement can be satisfied and how affected practitioners will demonstrate compliance with the training requirement beginning June 27.
Practitioners will be required to check a box on their online DEA registration form affirming that they completed the new training requirement. The deadline for satisfying this new training requirement is the date of a practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission — regardless of whether it is an initial registration or a renewal registration — on or after June 27.
A variety of continuing medical education (CME) and non-CME activities could satisfy the requirement, depending on individual circumstances. The American Medical Association (AMA) has developed a variety of (total of 36.5 hours) — many of which are free — that can be used to meet the federal requirement.
